At the End of Obon “Come Back Again”

At the End of Obon

“Come Back Again”

We lit the okuribi, the traditional farewell fire at the end of Obon.

Together with the children, we watched the flames and said to our ancestors,

“Come back again.”

At the beginning of Obon, we welcome them home.

We spend these few days together.

And then, with the farewell fire, we see them off once more.

Some of the ancestors we were saying goodbye to are people my children have never met.

And yet,

there was someone before us.

And someone before them.

And countless lives before that.

At the end of that long, unbroken chain,

here we are.

As the children watched the flames, I hoped they might somehow feel a little of that.

And while saying aloud,

“Come back again,”

I quietly made another promise in my heart:

“We will carry your love forward.”

The life we have received,

we pass on to the next life.

The kindness we have received,

we give to someone else.

The love we have received,

we carry forward again.

From our ancestors,

to our children.

And one day,

from our children

to those who come after them.

Perhaps this is how people continue to live within us,

even after we can no longer see them.

Eventually, the flames grew smaller.

The smoke rose gently into the sky.

See you again next year.

Until then,

we will live well,

together.

And we will make sure that

the love you gave us continues on.
