Itochi Blog — Obon Bonus Edition
The Cause of “Increased Abdominal Authority” Has Been Found in My Own Home
I just posted an article titled:
“When the Jangara Drums Begin, So Does the Community Health Check.”
It was about a man in the neighbourhood who had not been seen for a while.
When an older neighbour spotted him, he immediately said:
“Well, look at you! I haven’t seen you for ages—and you’ve certainly acquired some authority around the waist!”
The younger man, looking slightly embarrassed, offered his defence:
“Yeah… it’s Obon. I’ve been eating too much good food and drinking too much!”
I turned the episode into a rather nice story about how communities look after one another—how simply noticing a change in someone can be a form of mutual care.
Very heartwarming.
Very community-oriented.
Very Itochi.
Except…
Meanwhile, back at my own home—
some wonderfully fresh potatoes we had received from the countryside in Tamura for Obon had fallen into the hands of my wife.
And she transformed them into…
absolutely irresistible homemade potato chips.
They were delicious.
Seriously delicious.
And completely impossible to stop eating.
……
Perhaps I should not have been laughing at someone else’s “increased abdominal authority.” 🤣
It appears that the gentleman’s earlier testimony—
“It’s Obon. I’ve been eating and drinking too much!”
—was entirely credible after all.
Fresh potatoes from Tamura.
My wife’s cooking.
Freshly fried homemade chips.
Once those three forces combine,
there are limits to what self-help can achieve.
At that point,
all we can do is rely on mutual help from the community.
So if, after Obon, one of my neighbours looks at me and says,
“Atsushi, you seem to have acquired a little more authority around the waist!”
I will make no excuses.
I will simply stand tall and confess:
“The potatoes from Tamura were just too good!”
🥔🤣
—And that concludes our Obon bonus episode of
“When the Jangara Drums Begin, So Does the Community Health Check.”
Mutual help within the community is important.
But before we get to that—
when it comes to potato chips, apparently we still need a little self-help.
