医療を街に置く

― かしまモデル 二十年の軌跡 ―

第30話

白衣は、夢を着る。

今日、

かしま病院では、

小学生を対象とした医師職業体験

「キッズ医者かしま」

を開催しました。

2009年から続く、

夏休み恒例の取り組みです。


この企画は、

キッザニアにヒントをいただきました。

私が素晴らしいと思ったのは、

子どもたちを

「お客さん」

としてではなく、

「社会人」

として迎えるという考え方です。

だから、

私たちも、

遊びとしてではなく、

「医師として働く一日」

を体験してもらうことにしました。


白衣を着る。

名札を付ける。

患者さんに挨拶をする。

聴診器を持つ。

真剣に話を聴く。

もちろん、

本物の医師や看護師が見守ります。

でも、

主役は子どもたちです。

今日は、

午前11名、午後11名、計22名

キッズ研修医が、

かしま病院で働きました。


朝、

私は尋ねました。

「今日は何をしに病院へ来ましたか?」

一人の子が、

迷わず答えました。

「遊びじゃなくて、
学びに来ました。」

その一言が、

とても嬉しかった。

でも、

心の中では、

少しだけ欲張りなことも思いました。

いつの日か、

誰かが、

こう答えてくれたら。

「医師として働きに来ました。」


実は、

この企画を始めてから十数年。

修了生の中には、

実際に医学部へ進学したOB・OGが、

何人もいます。

もちろん、

全員が医療者になる必要はありません。

でも、

今日、

病院で感じた空気や、

誰かのために働く喜びは、

きっと、

それぞれの人生のどこかに残るはずです。


夕方、

午前の11名、

午後の11名、

合わせて22名全員が、

無事に研修を修了しました。

修了証を受け取り、

少し誇らしげな表情で、

病院を後にしていきました。

私は、

その後ろ姿を見送りながら思いました。

今日、

私たちが育てたのは、

未来の医師だけではありません。

未来の「地域を大切にする人」です。

その中の誰か一人でも、

「この街で、

誰かの役に立ちたい。」

そう思ってくれたなら、

今日の研修は、

大成功です。


医療を街に置く。

地域医療は、

病院の中だけでは育ちません。

子どもたちが、

病院を身近に感じること。

白衣を着て、

誰かのために働く責任と喜びを知ること。

その一日が、

十年後、

二十年後の地域医療を、

静かに支えているのだと思います。

だから私は、

未来の医療人たちに、

今年もこう声をかけました。

「先生、研修お疲れさまでした。」

Episode 30

A White Coat Worn for a Dream

Today,

our hospital

held its annual

children's medical experience program,

Kids Doctor Kashima.

We have been hosting it

every summer

since 2009.


The idea

was inspired

by KidZania,

the wonderful educational program

where children

are treated

not as customers,

but as young professionals.

We loved

that philosophy.

So,

we borrowed it.

Not the costumes.

Not the attractions.

The philosophy.

For one day,

children would not

"play doctor."

They would

work as doctors.


They put on

a white coat.

Wore

a name badge.

Greeted patients.

Held a stethoscope.

Listened carefully.

Thought seriously.

Of course,

experienced physicians

and nurses

were always nearby.

But for that day,

the stars of the hospital

were the children.

This year,

11 young doctors
worked in the morning,
and another 11
in the afternoon.

Twenty-two children

completed

their training.


At the beginning,

I asked them,

"Why did you come
to the hospital today?"

One child

answered immediately.

"Not to play.
To learn."

That answer

made me smile.

But quietly,

I hoped

that someday,

one child

might answer,

"I came
to work
as a doctor."


Over the years,

something wonderful

has happened.

Several graduates

of Kids Doctor Kashima

have actually gone on

to medical school.

That fills us

with joy.

But becoming a doctor

isn't the real goal.

Perhaps

one child

will become

a nurse.

Another,

a pharmacist.

A rehabilitation therapist.

A scientist.

A teacher.

Or something

completely different.

That doesn't matter.

What matters

is that,

for one day,

they experienced

the privilege

and responsibility

of caring

for another person.


By evening,

all twenty-two

young doctors

had completed

their training.

Each received

a certificate

and walked out

of the hospital

looking

just a little taller

than when

they had arrived.

Watching them leave,

I found myself thinking...

Perhaps,

today,

we did not simply nurture

future doctors.

Perhaps,

we helped nurture

future citizens

who will care

for their community.

If even one child

leaves believing,

"One day,
I want to help
someone
in this town."

then today

was already

a great success.


Bringing healthcare into the community

doesn't begin

inside a hospital.

It begins

when children

discover

the joy

and responsibility

of helping others.

One day.

One white coat.

One small dream.

Sometimes,

that is all it takes

to change

the future

of a community.

So today,

as our twenty-two

young doctors

finished their training,

I smiled

and said,

"Doctor,
thank you
for your hard work today."

And for just a moment...

they truly were.
